In loving memory of my cousin Sunny Patel, I'd like to share some cherished memories and reflections on his life.
Sunny, or as my daughters affectionately called him, "Sunny Mama," held a special place in our hearts. In Gujarati culture, the term "mama" denotes a maternal uncle. It gets confusing because my daughters also refer to me as "mama" but in the English language context as "mother".
Either way, it is a word laden with love and symbolizes the beautiful blend of languages and cultures that define our family.

My 5-year-old daughter, Meera, remembers him as the uncle who brought her the biggest gifts. From a bike that brought her immense joy on her birthday to his infectious enthusiasm during family gatherings, Sunny had a unique way of spreading happiness. He delighted in spoiling my children and never missed an opportunity to bring smiles to their faces. I was so pleased when he was my Secret Santa during our family gift exchange last year because he definitely went over the limit (much to the envious amusement of my other cousins haha).
Sunny and I shared a childhood filled with laughter and squabbles. Growing up just blocks apart, we spent time together almost every day. He often played the role of the mediator in my frequent arguments with my brother, though I usually ended up on the losing side as the pesky younger sister.

To me, Sunny was the epitome of coolness. He had more friends, an active social life, and a natural athleticism that I could only admire from afar. I was short and nerdy and Sunny's approval was a constant motivation in my life.
When I introduced him to my long-time partner, I was nervous about how he would react. Sunny surprised me with his open-mindedness and wholeheartedly embraced our union. He played a pivotal role as one of the MCs at my wedding, delivering a heartfelt speech that left a lasting impression. His support and acceptance were a testament to his character.

Saying good-bye to my family at my wedding. Sunny was the first to cry in the lineup at my Vidaai.
It's heartbreaking to lose someone so young, and I can't help but think of the moments Sunny will miss, especially in the lives of my children. I think of the unimaginable loss his parents and brother have endured. Yet, I try to focus on the joyous memories we shared.

In Hinduism, reincarnation is a core belief, offering the promise of infinite chances to live a perfect life. I find solace in the belief that I will miss and remember Sunny in this lifetime, and in the next, our paths will cross again. Whether a century from now or a millennium, we will reunite, bonded by our shared family ties. Perhaps it will be a fleeting encounter, a smile, and a silent recognition as we continue our respective journeys toward perfection.
Sunny, you will always hold a special place in our hearts, and your memory will live on in the love and warmth you brought into our lives.
